| Guy Gruwier (1963), maakt
aquarellen woont en werkt in de omgeving van de Leie, België. Deze
romantische rivier had rond 1900 een bloeiende vlasindustrie, Een van
de productiestappen was het “roten” van het vlas door het in water te
leggen in rootbakken. Hierdoor werd het water geel-rood gekleurd en
kreeg de Leie de naam van de “gouden rivier”. Rond deze tijd ook waren
een aantal Vlaamse schilders bezig met het “vangen” van het licht en de
atmosfeer van de Leie taferelen op doek. Zij maakten deel uit van de
beweging van het Vlaamse Impressionisme maar algauw werd hun stijl het
“luminisme” genoemd, naar de eigenschap om het licht op doek te vangen.
Eén van hun illustere vertegenwoordigers was Emile Claus (1849 –
1924), een schilder die ik erg bewonder en respecteer. Vandaag dienen de overgebleven meanders van de Leie als vissersplaatsen, maar ze bezitten nog steeds die magnifieke stilte en de laatste zonnestralen van de avondzon gloeien zo sterk na op het oppervlak van de stille waters dat ik uren kan zitten kijken naar de reflecties van de bomen waar doorheen de wind ruist ... Er is zo’n onweerstaanbare drang en verlangen om dit te schilderen, om die majestueuze nagloei van zonnestralen vast te houden, dat ik besliste om mijn schildersatelier op te richten in de nabijheid van de Leie oevers. En tot mijn grote voldoening leent aquarel zich uitstekend voor dergelijke onderwerpen! Zo werden mijn “Golden River Studios” geboren in een machtige omgeving waarin ook Emile Claus schilderde en die nog steeds die eeuwige rust en harmonie uitstraalt. Onderwerpen die Guy onder andere bezighouden zijn: natuur in de breedste zin des woord’s met uitstapjes naar architectuur in oude steden.
