Kunst met een knipoog Mijn werk is op zich moeilijk te plaatsen in een categorie. Mode en trends zijn aan mij niet besteed. Humor, parodie en cynisme staan centraal. Niet dat ik een grote boodschap wil meegeven, ik tracht te verbazen en te ontroeren. Mijn wereld wordt vertolkt door allerhande dieren en wezens die de hoofdrol spelen in het schilderij. Eigenlijk schilder ik mensen in de vorm van dieren die ik met precisie schilder zodat hun karakter duidelijk past in het geheel. Mijn werken krijgen daardoor iets menselijk. Ik tracht de illusie te geven dat de toeschouwer deel kan nemen aan de voorstelling en in het werk kan stappen. Daarom werk ik ook steeds aan één schilderij tegelijkertijd - ik moet in de geest en de sfeer van het werk kunnen blijven. In het hernemen van schilderijen geloof ik daarom ook niet, het spontane karakter verdwijnt. Mijn inspiratie haal ik uit het dagelijkse leven, elk voorval of beeld kan een begin zijn van een werk. Daar borduur ik dan verder op door. Details voeg ik toe of laat ik verdwijnen. Vaak verwerk ik ook oude spullen en stoffen in mijn schilderijen omdat ze een prachtige patine hebben. Ze hebben een verleden zodat je die zaken een ziel kan meegeven en daardoor tastbaar worden. Ook ben ik in de ban van alles wat mobiel is: illustere zeppelins, perpetuum mobile, zeepkisten... Het blijft voor mij een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie. Uiteraard speelt voor mij de techniek een heel grote rol. Het is hét middel om mijn ideeën uit te werken. Daarom stel ik hoge eisen aan de afwerking, voldoet het werk niet, gaat het mijn atelier niet buiten. Meestal gebruik ik achtergronden die zacht van tint zijn of een fotografische onscherpte vertonen zodat het hoofdgebeuren op de voorgrond treedt, soms met zinderende kleuren. Verder vind ik het uitermate belangrijk om de schilderijen een juiste ambiance mee te geven door de manier waarop ik de figuren belicht. Door objecten van verschillende tijden naast, of achter elkaar te plaatsen tracht ik een surrealistische wereld te scheppen, vaak in combinatie met fauna en flora. Dat is het gevolg van mijn ontegensprekelijke liefde voor de natuur. Deze cocktail tracht ik over te brengen naar de toeschouwer zodat ook hij zich kan laten meeslepen in de voorstelling. “My paintings always have a reference to pleasure and happiness...” Biography Born in 1973 in Beveren-Waas, Belgium. Now I live and work in Stekene, Belgium. Between the tubes and the smell of oil paint, I grew up in an artistic environment. Art was always present in music, sculpture and paintings. My love for drawing and art also started at an early age. I loved creating cars, monsters and imaginary worlds from as far back as I can remember. Ever since a child I was fascinated by animals and plants. I even thought that animals, like us, spoke our language, but were quiet when people came near. Apparently, I still have the same imagination... I was educated as a graphic designer and studied the same time a classical academic course 'drawing in pencil'. Later I learned the technique of oil painting in the studio of my father. After my education, I worked for a time in the Museum of Sint-Niklaas as an assistant in the organization of temporary exhibitions. The combination of painting and working in the museum was no longer maintainable, and after some time I chose to work as an artist full time. About my work, the animals that I paint are often a metaphor for people in all their situations. Those situations, or certain images that I see, are often a trigger to start a new painting. Incongruity is for me an inexhaustible source for new ideas. My paintings always have a reference to pleasure and happiness. For a new work I usually make a sketch of the composition first. I never start on the panel directly but I always make first a sketch, this shows the grid of the composition. In my work are the elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and sometimes elements of 'Steampunk'. According to Wikipedia: Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. Therefore, steampunk works are often set in an alternate history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. I also like the idea of another Belgian Surrealist Magritte. He described his paintings as "visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, 'What does that mean?'. It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.
