From the depths of mirrors, or echoes of Alice

Woman-child, child-woman, one after the other, a procession moves along, panting after painting in which the strange and so recognisable landscape of the shadowy skin of a face is pierced through by the silent and penetrating gaze of an eye.
And even if the eye does not look away – which sometimes happens- it gives us, laid on the canvas, glimpses of the vibrant, fleeting eternity of the essence of life.

In front of these portraits and self portraits, which overflow the physical frame of their image, there arises a secret dialogue, an
exchange between two observers, a subtle alchemy which mixes up the roles of the visitor and the paintings: A queer sensation of stepping over the edge of the mirror and entering its reality. The sensation of timelessness, which pervades all these works, is never systematic: hazy backdrops, or familiar surroundings, but vanishing into
otherness alternate with deep blacks; the brushwork on patterns of some fabrics suggests strange landscapes, almost engraved, dazzling…

But the essence of the portrait is always predominant. Portraits whose profusion and variety form a coherent whole, without actual beginning and ending: a powerful affirmation of the link that painting establishes between the most fundamental questions on human identity.
In this way, we are here faced with the major enigma of the modernity and permanence of the portrait.
At the meeting point of classicism and modernity, in the organic depths of the glazes in which the soft glow of a cheek and the penumbra of a nascent glance are suffused and alternating, let us be carried away to
the very brim of mirrors, the place where the muffled echoes of Alice’s numerous voices are whispering along forgotten footpaths and thus lead us toward a hidden part of ourselves.
